Movie/Video files and folder mess

Submitted by dehetepappie on August 17, 2008 to Annoyance

The OS X user directory has Movies/Music/Pictures subfolders. Very logical and intuitive. Music for music, Movies for video files, etc. So when I drag a movie into iTunes where does it store the file? Right: in /Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Videos. Additionally, by default OS X unexplainably maps .mp4 to Quicktime and .m4v to iTunes for playback.

For a bundled application that is so integral to the user experience these inconsistencies are very annoying.

Use the Music folder for music, Movies for movies.

Though there's nothing to prevent it, the contents of an iTunes library isn't really intended to be browsed via the file system. In fact, it could get confusing to do so since iTunes usually manages that folder structure, causing files to move and get renamed independent of user actions.

On the other hand, you do have a point about using the Music and Movies folders to contain what they say they contain.

Considering all these points, why not keep the entire contents of an iTunes library in ~/Library/Application Support instead? That'd keep it browsable by a user in the Finder, it'd keep things together under one parent folder to facilitate iTunes' automatic managing, and it doesn't violate the naming conventions of the Music and Movies folders.

@Zog
I agree with your suggestion.

I pretty much agree with Zog, now that iTunes is for MUCH more than music, why keep the iTunes Library in the Music folder by default. In fact, why still call it iTunes? Cause now it does Tunes, Movies, TV Shows, Mobile Apps and Mobile Data Sync management... But I'm getting sidetracked.

I personally have moved my iTunes library, but having it default to the Music folder is kinda stupid.
