Internal DVD drive required to play any VIDEO_TS folder

Submitted by dehetepappie on August 17, 2008 to Bug

If you unplug/remove the internal DVD drive of any Mac, OS X (DVD Player/Front Row) is then unable to play VIDEO_TS folders on the hard drive or DVDs in an external (USB) DVD drive. Has been a bug since at least Panther, never fixed. Basically forces people, when the internal drive dies, to order (expensive) Apple replacement drives, even if they don't even use it.

Fix the bug in DVD Player that an internal DVD drive has to be present in order to play DVDs.

Edit: Believe it or not, but using a hacked AppleSMBios.kext from the Hackintosh scene fixes it. Google "AppleSMBios 28". Wow. Bunch of hackers fix a bug that Apple ignores for years.

I agree this is the stupidest thing ever... I ran into this problem a long time ago (think I was running Panther) and was able to find a third party patch for DVD player. But haven't since had a computer without a DVD drive so haven't kept up with it.
