Easy switch between monitors

Submitted by basvdijk on August 16, 2008 to Usability

You have no control on which monitor you want to have on and which not. I use an external monitor on my MacBook Pro. When connecting the external monitor I can not disable the laptop monitor.

On a pc laptop it is possible to cycle through monitor modes like: external - laptop - clone view - extended desktop. It would be nice if MacOS has the same possibility.

A cursory examination of some google searches brought this up:

You can use your MacBook Pro with an external monitor without using the built-in screen.

And you can easily switch between monitors using the System Preferences 'Display' app.

He doesn't want to use the system preference. He obviously just want's to use the F7/change display mode-key. But this key just swaps between clone mode and extended display.

I too would like to see the full featured F7 key.

It would also be nice not only to have the three options to cycle through but also a fourth opening a system preference pane offering further configuration and detailed explanation for each pre-set.
