Spaces: setting for desktop-switching speed

I love Spaces -- or, rather, I think I will love it when I can use it.

I switch between desktops the way most people switch between applications. I'm used to the transitions being instantaneous. The Spaces transition is too slow -- I would like it to be very fast (with animation), or just plain instantaneous (without animation).

As most of Apple's UI features, this one cannot be customized according to the user's preferences. Compiz for the Linux platform allows the exact timing and speed for each transition to be configured which made it usable for me, as I was not lucky with the standard properties either!
