Play/Pause (F8) button forces to open iTunes in Snow Leopard

Submitted by manujarvinen on March 25, 2010 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

When you use Spotify for example, and want to pause the playback by pushing the Play/pause (F8) button, the playback is paused, but iTunes is opened at the same time. VERY annoying!

Even more annoying is the fact that this is an added feature to Snow Leopard.
It doesn't happen in Leopard.

Solution 1: Make it behave like in Leopard again!

Solution 2: In keyboard settings, allow user to control which programs the button opens/pauses and how.

Not a solution, but a clumsy workaround:
Set QuickTime Player to run at log in and leave it running it in the background. It will prevent the iTunes to open when pausing Spotify.
This workaround does not create any windows, and does not appear to use a lot if any of the system resources.
