Trying to rename a folder in use results in unhelpful dialog

Submitted by migueld on November 21, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

When trying to rename a folder in use, an unhelpful misleading dialog shows up "An unexpected error occurred (error code -8065)".

Display a more helpful dialog such as "Operation can't be completed while folder is in use". There should not be any "unexpected" or "error" wording. It's not unexpected, it's a normal operation that's simply not allowed under certain conditions.

Changed title from [Trying to rename a folder in use results in unhelpful ugly dialog] to [Trying to rename a folder in use results in unhelpful dialog].

It kind of is an unexpected error, isn't it? In my experience, Mac OS does not prevent you from renaming folders, even when they contain items in use.

How did you get this to show up?

I can get this to come up when I copy a large file/folder from another computer on my network at home, and while it is still copying to mine I try to change the filename. Then, this error appears. Not sure how the OP got it to appear (maybe the same way), but +1 it is a baffling error message.

Yea I don't remember exactly how I got it, but it was a basic operation like tock_v described. My guess is that since this is a cocoa Finder, they've done error handling differently and haven't 'tuned' to this particular case.
