"delete" & "rename" option during "open" & "save as" dialogs!

Submitted by lukasdesign on July 20, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

Often when I save files I would love to rename an existing file, in order to keep the new and the old file name's coherent....but I can't do that on the fly! I would love to be able to rename (or move to trash) from within the program's "save as" and "open" dialogs!

Correct file naming is so important...so why not make it is direct as possible?

I used to support users in a university computer lab and there were a handful of users that thought they had to use Microsoft Word to rename files. They had no idea that the Finder was the application intended for file management.

I always thought it was weird that Word had those features, it seemed extraneous to me at the time... however, I have had similar thoughts that a quick rename would be useful from the Save dialog.

"Open" and "Save as" dialogs ARE Finder.

I AGREE!!! This is my HUGELY frustrating that you cannot do this. Probably my #2 complaint about the Mac.

Yes, some will say that it shouldn't because beginning users might accidentally rename or delete. Okay, make it an advanced user option but don't shackle me to having to do things the same way to keep the numbnuts from hurting themselves!
