Time Machine: Improve backup/restore Performance

Submitted by Flauchhaus on March 17, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

Backing up: Time Machine takes way too much time to back up files as small as 20MB and while the backup process is running it uses quite much CPU usage so if the user runs an app/game it slows down quite significantly. The beginning and ending of backups taking too much time.

Restoring: When using the supported TimeCapsule via gigabit lan as backup drive the restoring with TimeMachine is very laggy - "moving in time" with the arrows is very slow and it takes some time to display the changes in folders with many files.

Improve backup/restore Performance. Don't just back up files every hour - back them up "live" as they change. Run the backup process with lower HDD/CPU priority so it doesn't slow down the running system/apps/games.

You know, honestly, this is a no-brainer. Apple will improve Time Machine in Snow Leopard (wich is a performance update), so this is like stating the obvious just to become famous here for posting something that everybody wants - even Apple will probably understand their current Time Machine isn't working the best way it can, but engineers are probably typing code right now.

Honestly, this one is such a no-brainer that posting it is just silly. It was a new feature in Leopard, and Apple always refines things afterwards. It doesn't change the behaviour of it's features untill the next real OS-update. And Apple told us that they were improving MacOS all-around in Snow Leopard. And all-around still includes Time Machine in my educated guess.

Im sorry if you think that. Im just doing what this website is for:
"Find, publish and rate user experience quirks in Mac OS X".
-like the overall sluggish Time Machine feature.

If you really think that i am doing this because i enjoy being "famous" on a page about UI problems (lol!) feel free to do so.

I just think of this one as, erm, pointless. Apple will improve time machine. Everybody knows that. My experience of this site is suggestions for the OS, or improvements that aren't obvious to everyone (like multiple monitor problems, wich don't concern everyone). But Time Machine is a major new function. You know it'sz going to improve. You know that right know Apple is working on it. Everybody knows. Yet you still deem it worthy to post, even though in a few months from now we are all sure it'll be an utterly useless point.

It's just so over-obvious that I don't think you should post it, because it's useless. Apple has gradually improved TIme Machine in Leopard and will keep improving it in snow leopard. They have already issued updates for it.

It just seems like ranting to me.
