Allow dock position to be set independent of menu bar.

Submitted by kelchm on February 22, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

Admittedly this might have a somewhat limited scope, but for those of us using multiple monitors, the ability to position the dock entirely independently of the menu bar would be a welcome feature.

Personally, I don't really use the dock for anything more than notifications (mail, tasks, messages, etc) and opening applications that are running, but do not have an open window. With this type of use I find that positioning the dock on a secondary monitor is ideal. It allows me to use the full height and width of my primary screen without having to hide the dock.

As it is now, with my main monitor on the right and the secondary (macbook) is on the left. I currently have the dock set to "left" which places the dock on the left hand side of the macbook's screen. Ideally I should be able to position the dock in any edge position on any available monitors.

NOTE: I've added an image that shows how my dock is on the left hand side of the secondary monitor while the menu bar is at the top of the primary screen.

Add a moveable dock to the Displays pane in System Preferences like the menu bar has. The user can then move the dock by dragging it to any available edge.

I don't know what the proiblem is, but there are already three topics about multi-monitor - and all of them offer a wide range of different solutions.

I think this is a bad idea. Your dock and menu bar should remain on the same screen because they're both necessary to control your applications and functions. They will always move together - and I don't see the problem here. (Also: I don't see why people want the full-screen thing this much - it's not like ten more pixels will make it easier to edit your RAW pictures).

Anyways, as I suggested before, the dock and menubar should just be accesible from all screen by going to the top of the screen, where it will appear untill you cursor moves away, when it returns to the 'home' screen.

Jasper, Its pretty clear to me you lack a full understand of this. My dock is already on a different monitor than the menu bar. This is an existing feature. If you want to try it just set the dock position to the same side as your secondary monitor.

What I'm asking for is the ability to actually control where the dock goes. For example, sometimes I would like to put the dock on the bottom of the secondary monitor.

And really, don't knock this configuration until you have tried it. I used to have the dock until I stopped using it as a launcher. Thats really not its forte. Use it for notifications and occasional window switching.

Also, I don't know about your dock, but mine is more like 60 pixels high, not 10. I want to be able to use all of the real estate on my primary screen without hiding the dock.

Personally I have no problem with the menu bar only being present on the primary screen.
