Mail: three pane view

Submitted by mojo2012 on February 4, 2009 to Usability

With modern widescreen displays there is enough space to show the navigation pane, the mail folder and the mail preview side by side (look at the screenshots).
Sadly Mail has just the horizontal split pane, which ihmo is not very useful. You don't see the whole mail nor do you see much mail folder entries.
There are a few Mail plugins that can do that for you. But as they are not actively developed anymore, it could be over with each os update.

Additionally this could be combined with a "multiline" list as it is offered by WideMail. For those who don't know such a feature:
it is basically an extension for the normal listbox. Several lines with information (message header, sender, receipient, ...) can be displayer below each other. So the horizontal dimesion is reduced --> more infos can be displayed.
The displayed fields should as well be customizable.

Implement an optional three pane view for Mail.

I've been begging for this for years (I was wishing for it back when Mail used the side drawer for mailboxes, that was just dumb)! I used the WideMail Plugin for a while, unfortunately it seems to make Mail a little more unstable (and got even worse with the last OS update), and it's implementation leaves much to be desired!

You're right, widemail could be better. But on the other hand it's more than nothing ;-) and I couln't live without it.
