Delete Individual Items in Trash

Submitted by jay314 on December 29, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

I want to delete individual files from the trash, without emptying the whole trash bin.

This can be done via the terminal, but it should be available through finder.

Allow the user to press CMD + delete on a selection of items in the trash to permanently delete them.

Why is this a problem that it can't be done via the Finder? I think the question for if something should be included there is the utility for most people using the operating system, not just what a few people would like to have.

I'm not trying to be negative, but do you really think that most people would like to have this feature? I'm not sure that I'd ever use it, personally... but that's just another anecdote to match your anecdote.

That being said, I voted for this because I think it could be added easily, as you suggest, by allow a delete of something already in the trash to be a permanent delete.

This is a great idea jay314, often I just have to delete a large file to clear up space on a flash drive, but don't want to empty my entire trash can. Applications are available that immediately delete files when you drag them to an icon, but they take up space in the dock or desktop. Command-delete on a file already in the trash seems like an elegant solution.

Well... if stuff is in the trash is because it is to be deleted, otherwise it wouldn't be in the trash...

typical answers from osx fanboys. if something can't be done on osx it isnt worth doing is that right?

the question was perfectly reasonable and practical yet you fanboys can't offer any reasonable advice and instead start dissing the op. get over yourself and get over osx

true, I use OMCedit to have an 'erase file' in the contextmenu

+1, I've noticed this too, and its a little annoying when you want to, just in case, keep some files in the finder, but delete the ones that are hogging the most space, like an application!

+1* If you do not intend to restore some of the files you have moved to the trash then you could just permanently delete them (except you think it needs more time for bigger files and you need to take an extra break to do the intensive work).
Anyway, version control works even better for me (-> TimeMachine), so I usually circumvent the trash.

+1 (I don't prescribe to the short-sighted view of @carlosefonseca and others I've heard say the same thing.) I often delete files en mass because I'm 99% sure I don't need them but want to keep them around for the 1% chance I was wrong. Whenever I end up with a huge file (like an mp4) that I want to delete to clear up space I don't want to have to empty the entire thing.
