Feature Request: add a basic drawing tool

Submitted by mojo2012 on November 2, 2008 to Usability

Mac OS has a very powerful texteditor, address book, mail app and a browser. But there is not drawing tool. Why? I don't want a photoshop or corel draw. But at least a very basic drawing tool would be nice.

Well, additional functionality is always welcome. But first we need a basic drawing tool ... and sadly Apple doesn't supply such a thing.

If Microsoft has this, Apple is in slight trouble.

IF Microsoft has this? Paint comes standard with a Windows install. Microsoft does have this.

Almost all entry-level Mac computers sold before OS X were bundled with AppleWorks (previously ClarisWorks) which included a fantastic drawing tool. It's a shame this great application was left to rot and replaced with other less integrated packages. The Mac has no entry-level database software, drawing tools or layout packages anymore which is very disappointing.

I still use AppleWorks on OS X for drawing layouts, it doesn't require a graphic-design course like Illustrator or InDesign but still has some very powerful features I haven't found in other packages. You may be able to track down a copy of AppleWorks 6.2.9 on eBay, but I have no idea if it works on Leopard or Intel Macs. Unfortunately printing support is a bit broken in the OS X version so printing drawings always results in a 72 dpi (very blocky) image on the printer. A quick work-around is to enlarge the drawing by 400% then use Print Setup to scale the image down to 25%. It then prints at 288 dpi which is quite adequate for most printers. Or you can just use the OS 9 version which prints without issue.
