iTunes unusable during iPod update

Submitted by jasper on September 10, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

When iTunes is backing up the iPod and installing the software update, you are unable to use iTunes for playing music or do anything else, while if you synchronize the iPod it just backs up in the background (and installs apps in the background).

Get the update process in a background task, with the information in the top-green-thingy.

I'm guessing there's a good reason why it prevents iTunes from doing anything else - I'm quite happy to wait for it to update my iPod without bricking it.

Erm, you're happy being unable to pauze your music when it's on or put on music for the coming hour? They can do a way around this by making it a background process. There's no good reason, except that you might crash iTunes - and thus brick your iPod - but this could happen at anytime, although I do understand why Apple does this now - iTunes 8 crashes more frequently than a man with one leg running the marathon.

Although it would be nice to have this feature, it seems a bit much to mark this as medium. An update of this sort is not common, so the impact is fairly low.

True. DIdin't really know on this one. But hey, my iPod Touch is broke anyway now - so it doesn't really matter anymore... (Cries)

Sucked in, your iPod Touch is broken. My original Generation 1 iPod is still working fine. I guess there are advantages to living in the past.

iTunes 8 doesn't crash. Maybe you should learn how to use your computer properly. You must have broken it.

This has been getting progressively more annoying lately.
