Show metadata in the Finder

Submitted by treizep on August 23, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

OSX handles metadata associated to files but behaves randomly at showing this data to the user.

The preview pane of the Finder Column View shows less metadata as the Finder Info window shows. The Tree View of the Finder is unable to show any metadata at all !

And last but not least the mdls terminal command displays a lot more metadata than the Finder is able to show.

The Finder Info window and Column View preview pane must be able to display the same amount of metadata as the mdls terminal command does (example: aperture, exposure... of photos, bitrate, length... of music).

The Finder Tree View must be able to display additional columns to show the metadata relevant to the user needs => In users music folder Tree View needs columns to show bitrate, length... of music files, in users image folder Tree View needs columns to show color depth, image size... of images...

If some of the people demoting this suggestion can explain me why they don't want this feature ?

abitgone wrote on August 24, 2008, 9:37pm

I think the reason that people are demoting it is that the Finder shows essential metadata - if you wanted to see all of the metadata, you can just CMD-I and see it all.

No the finder doesn"t show the essential metadata nor all the metadata.

I have MRW (RAW) pictures on my MBP. The finder only shows dimensions of the picture in the preview pane. The Info window shows dimensions and alpha channel (which is irrelevant in the case of a RAW picture). I have to use the mdls command in terminal to get the camera model or more relevant metadatas.

That's a very reasonable feature wish, but no quirk. Maybe we should have another website that lists feature wishes?

Simply being to see (and sort) pictures by dimensions would do for me.
