WYSIWYG Font lists in Fontpanel, Fontbook & iApps

Wrote on March 4, 2009, 4:34am

1) Once again, what was Apple thinking? This should be one of those checkboxes in the Preferences, you know like, "Show Fonts menu in actual fonts (WYSIWYG)". Maybe system-wide, maybe application specific, but something! Anything is better than nothing! Give the user the option!

2) A work-around is to use FontBook to create "collections" of fonts for specific purposes. Put your favorite decorative fonts in a group, your favorite serifs in another group, and so on. This takes some initial setup, but the payoff is fantastic. Your groups now show up in EVERY app that uses the OSX font chooser. I know, it doesn't beat an actual WYSIWYG menu, but it's better than scrolling through dozens of unorganized fonts.

3) With that said, the presence of WYSIWYG font menus is a thin excuse for using such outdated (and I might add: unstable) software as AppleWorks 6 on Mac OS X. I'd even recommend using Word instead. ClarisWorks, later called AppleWorks, was a beauty on OS 8.6 - 9.2 and I loved it. But lack of WYSIWYG font menus is a poor exxcuse for not upgrading to superior programs like Pages and Keynote.

Safari Bookmarks bar

I understand abitgone's view, but adherance to standards would be nice. Every other menubar on other GUIs switche between menus on hover, not on click. Fewer clicks is better.

Sounds for Plugging in and Unplugging

Wrote on March 4, 2009, 3:51am

Maybe Apple should add an option similar to the "Play user interface sounds" checkbox, along the lines of "Notify me when a device is connected or disconnected." Sounds would be similar to iChat sounds when a buddy goes online or offline, or replies to your message. iChat sounds are completely configurable for any action, why not the OS?
I've used and liked Growl a lot, too. Doesn't it also have sound options?

My opinion is, since this is a low severity item, it should be an SysPref option, and not an irreversable, integrated standard.

Hey, Coverflow was a free iTunes add-on for a while before Apple bought and integrated it into iTunes, and later the OS. Maybe someday Growl and hardware growl will see the same glory. :)

Printing page ranges

Wrote on March 4, 2009, 3:34am

I want to self-publish a booklet that is approx. 20 pages long. I want to print it on US Letter size paper on both sides, with Landscape orientation, with 2 pages per sheet. When it is all printed I want to crease the stack of sheets down the middle and staple it, with all the pages in the correct order like a published book.

I know how to format the document for printing this way, but it requires printing the pages on the sheets in "random" order, as shown here:

----
To print 9 pages at 3 sheets per segment:

segment count:
1

Front side list
1,1,1,3,8,5, <– I need to print the document this order,

Back side list
2,1,4,9,6,7, <– flip the pages around, and print again in this order.

Blank endpages =3
----

Currently, I can only do this using Word, because only Word includes the "Print Range" functionality.
SNow I have extra hoops to jump through, namely using "File > Export... > Word" (I'm running iWork '05) and configure all the 'Page Setup' and 'Print' formatting in Word to print it correctly. The logical answer is to use Word in the first place- but I dislike MS Office. That's why I bought iWork.

Front Row runs on primary monitor only and blanks the others

"Anyways, what I'm saying is: yes to preference of screen, no to working on it and watching video at the same time..."

Ok, cool. Just remember, jasper, that you are not the only mac user out there. Show a little humility, man. If you don't have something nice to say, then keep it to yourself. Just because MOST people don't NEED to have the feature in question doesn't mean that ALL users will NEVER want it. IMO, It should be an option.

Consider this jasper: What if, while watching your movie on Front Row, you just want to keep an eye on an RSS feed, or a download's progress, or your Inbox? Is that too much to ask? We're not talking about running Final Cut Pro and Front Row simultaneously, ok?
