Merge folders option when copying/moving

Wrote on July 15, 2010, 4:08pm

Merge should not do any diffing. It should simply ask what to do on all individual folder and file conflicts.

For individual file conflicts, it should ask whether you want to replace, rename (either by appending a "2" to the filename or allowing you specific control over the renaming, I don't care which) or skip. It should also offer a checkbox allowing you to apply the designated action to all further conflicts within the current merge process.

On individual folder conflicts, it should ask to merge, replace, rename or skip with a checkbox allowing you to apply the designated action to all further conflicts within the current merge process and/or all subfolders within the folder being asked about at that moment.

I must admit, I do like how Windows 7 does its merging. Apple could really learn a lot from Windows' current merging capabilities.

Folders mixed with files in the Finder

Wrote on October 12, 2008, 9:04pm

@mojo2012: I just looked at the finder options again, and now I have a migrane... :P

@abitgone: too bad find as you type doesn't work inside many apps' save-as, and similar dialogs.

Folders mixed with files in the Finder

Path Finder is NOT the solution. Finder's lack of folder sorting penetrates deep into the core of the system, including applications. I use web development apps, which also mix files and folders in the list... highly inconvenient!

Moreso, having to use Path Finder when I /do/ actually use finder (I avoid it in order to remain sane) Path Finder is YAI (Yet Another Inconvenience).

Why doesn't apply just buy Path Finder and integrate into the core of the system, thereby replacing Finder altogether? :P

Dialog windows lack keyboard shortcuts and tabbing (by default)

Wrote on September 17, 2008, 6:28pm

Usability Standards, yes!

This non-tabbing and keyboard-shortcut-lacking issue is rampant among apps, even when the feature is enabled. Sadly, ADOBE is a major culprit ... especially with Dreamweaver. The new versions have not fixed this, but I don't think it should be an application-specific thing.

THIS REALLY MAKES ME WANT TO TEAR UP LITTLE TEDDY BEARS!!

Shouldn't have to EJECT a thumb drive

I've never had a problem simply removing usb gear on windows. Same thing on the mac. But for those who feel this is dumb, I have a proposition:

Whenever a drive is connected, it has the ability to be removed any time, at which point if there IS actually some action going on, the machine can simply pause mid-transfer, notify the person to reinsert the drive so it can finish. Perhaps too, an option to continue later, and if the files were being transferred in a clean, read-only write-minimally way, there wouldn't be too many issues in doing this. Otherwise yanks that sucker and you're free to go!

Would you call that a smart USB system?

Oh, and don't forget a SKIP option!!

Annoyance! ... Usability!!

Many files have been lost due to this lack of fundamental functionality. Not just my own either. And yes, not as much recently... because I've learned from my mistakes. ;)

Ideally though, they should go a hair further and implement a smarter replace option, which can replace with newer/older, or ignore files of the same size, etc.

Folders mixed with files in the Finder

Sorting by type is not the solution. Try sorting by name while having folders at the top!

I've lost countless hours of productivity simply by having to dig for a folder, especially in complex web projects. Sadly, the finder ui makes it's lack of decent organizational ways into the core of any app that can open or save files.
