Printing page ranges

Submitted by MicrowaveDave on October 3, 2008 to Usability

Most OS X print dialogue boxes only give the choice of printing 'All' pages, or printing pages 'From:' to 'to:' so printing non-consecutive pages requires multiple print jobs.

All standard OS X print boxes should allow a user to print page ranges. Some software already adds its own non-standard print box allowing you to enter a range of pages eg 'Print Pages: 1, 5-7, 12-15' but these are not common.

Finder & OS X: File modification & creation dates are discarded when transferring files to FAT32 volumes

Submitted by MicrowaveDave on October 1, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

When copying or saving files to FAT32 volumes (USB Flash Drives, digital camera memory cards, media boxes, digital photo frames, mobile phones, Windows formatted hard disks etc) OS X discards the file's original creation and modification dates. (more...)

Force the Finder and OS to respect file creation and modification dates when it uses FAT32 volumes.

Finder: No way to refresh a window

Submitted by MicrowaveDave on October 1, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

There is no way to refresh a Finder window's view. This is a big problem particularly when accessing network volumes when other people or processes have modified files, because the current view of a folder cannot be relied upon to reflect the actual (more...)

Add a Refresh Window menu item and keyboard shortcut.

(Apple's KnowledgeBase suggests opening the folder, creating a new folder inside then trashing the new folder, which will force the Finder to update the folder's size. Apart (more...)

OS X can't read or burn Multi Session DVDs

Submitted by MicrowaveDave on January 8, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

The DVD UDF format allows DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs to be read and written to just like floppy drives. You can add extra files and folders until the DVD is full, plus delete and rename existing files. However OS X doesn't support this feature. Even worse, (more...)

Allow OS X to read all common DVD formats as specified by the UDF standard.

Allow burning multi-session DVDs from the Finder.

Bluetooth File Exchange application is terrible

Submitted by MicrowaveDave on December 28, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

It's absolute crap! It can't transfer folders, baulks when transferring too many files at the same time, doesn't have a search function and doesn't display any information other than file size. It forces users to copy items to the (more...)

Allow users to mount Bluetooth devices in the Finder. Problem solved.

iTunes can't auto-scan folders for new or missing media

Submitted by MicrowaveDave on December 29, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

If iTunes could automatically scan folders for changes it would be almost perfect software!

At the moment I can't simply download movies or music into a folder and have iTunes automatically index all new files, it has to be manually (more...)

Allow iTunes to scan for folder changes. Have it check upon startup, or have a button in Preferences along the lines of 'Scan folder for changes'. Add new files into the 'Files Added Today' smart playlist and alert when media is (more...)

iTunes ignores the system-wide 'Check for updates' setting

Submitted by MicrowaveDave on December 24, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

iTunes still checks for updates even if I have turned off 'Check for updates' in the Software Updates system prefeference pane. Users have to manually turn off updates in iTunes itself.

This is absolutely infuriating for novice (more...)

iTunes updates can separately be disabled in the application itself, but because it is an Apple application, it should respect the system-wide update setting.

No 'Terminal Services' equivalent for OS X Server

Submitted by MicrowaveDave on December 8, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

OS X really needs a Terminal Services server. Supposedly it wouldn't currently work because it's too difficult to adapt the Quartz graphics engine to work on a virtual screen, but it really limits businesses who would prefer to run OS X on (more...)

Apple will never be a serious contender for corporate clients without this functionality because it is becoming such a popular, cost-effective and easily maintainable way to manage IT resources. They really need to invest time and money bringing this (more...)

Finder: Folder's modification date changes when .ds_store file is added

Submitted by MicrowaveDave on October 1, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug

When viewing the contents of a folder that does not already contain a .ds_store file, the Finder automatically adds the invisible file but at the same time changes the modification date of the folder. This makes it appear that the folder contents have (more...)

Suggestion 1) Allow .ds_store files to be added without changing the folder's original modification date.
Suggestion 2) Completely dispose of .ds_store files and have a central desktop database (Similar to OS 9 DesktopDB or Spotlight's (more...)

Menu font and size cannot be changed

Submitted by MicrowaveDave on December 28, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

OS X doesn't allow the user to change menu (and menu bar) fonts and sizes.

I have many elderly or disabled clients who have poor eyesight and need bigger fonts. Some are stuck with using OS 9 or Windows because they simply cannot (more...)

Allow the user to pick their own fonts for menus, or at least give them the option to increase the size of the default font.

Default fonts that make 'I' (upper-case i) look like 'l' (lower case L)

Submitted by MicrowaveDave on January 13, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

This is SO ANNOYING - I just had a client who lost a contract worth tens of thousands of dollars because they couldn't find the phone number of their business associate. His name is Illington (iLLington) so they searched and searched everywhere, (more...)

Solution 1: Make important fonts like the default system font LEGlBLE (did anybody notice I misspelt it?). These fonts are used by Address Book, Mail, Safari and other Apple applications so should be the best suited to the task.

Solution (more...)

iChat AV can't video-chat between Mac and Windows computers

Submitted by MicrowaveDave on January 6, 2009 to Usability

iChat AV is supposed to be the best video chat application, but it only works with Macs. That would be fine if it also supported the most popular video-chat protocols like MSN, but it doesn't. It's completely impossible to use Apple or MSN (more...)

Either produce a Windows version of iChat, or enable iChat to be compatible with MSN Messenger video-chat.

I know both of these ideas are pretty far-fetched, nobody needs to comment on exactly why neither of these things will ever happen (more...)

Copied files from some DVDs and CDs are given Read Only access

Submitted by MicrowaveDave on December 4, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

Files and folders copied from SOME DVDs or CDs are given Read Only access privileges by OS X. I can't modify any of the contents until manually setting the folder and enclosed items privileges to Read & Write. Sure, the files are Read Only (more...)

The Finder should default to giving Read & Write access to files copied from CD and DVD.

Provide a terminal command to revert to the older file-copy behaviour, just so admins who expect the old behaviour are not disadvantaged. Files (more...)

No Network Trash can

Submitted by MicrowaveDave on October 1, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

OS 9 had a Network Trash can. If I moved a file from a network volume to the trash can, it would appear in my local trash can but still be stored on the server in an invisible Network Trash folder. The trashed file could be restored with the 'Put (more...)

Move trashed files to a Network Trash folder on the server. The Finder already adds .ds_store files, .(resource) files and various other bits and pieces to each folder it accesses, so adding one more thing would just be a minor annoyance but a major (more...)

WindowShade is gone

Submitted by MicrowaveDave on October 1, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

WindowShade, the ability to double-click a folder's title bar and have it minimise in-place (rather than moving down to the dock) is not available in OS X. It was available in MacOS 7.5-9 but Apple never added it back to OS X. Often I just want (more...)

Add it back as an option so we can choose between minimise to dock or WindowShade. The windows can be spring-loaded so when you hover over them the window maximises again temporarily, which may also please some people who are aching for tabbed Finder (more...)
