Thanks for your comments, but this behavior is nonetheless a bug.
Using Exposé is a good idea though.

Column View of Finder needs to be able to show widest contained folder/file names.

Agreed that the small width is a problem. However, when you're looking for a short folder name just to go deeper in the tree, the suggested auto-expansion feature will definitely harm usability.
A more creative solution is required here.

It does. If you press Option while switching to a minimized app, it maximizes it :)

For the rare cases you need to access the status bar, you can hide the Dock with CMD-option-D.
Does it warrant the perpetual waste of screen area? I think not.
