Tasks bringing applications to the front

Submitted by Greymatters on October 6, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

You give "Application A" a task to do. While it is doing this, you go to "Application B" and continue working. In the middle of typing, you realize that you are now typing in "Application A" as it has completed its task and (more...)

At the very least, give the user an option to have tasks complete in the background.

IP number in Show Info of a shared computer

Submitted by dehetepappie on August 17, 2008 to Annoyance

If I rightclick or command-i on a computer in the network, I would expect to be able to see its IP address somewhere. But no...not even in the More Info section. Do Apple expect me to go into the terminal for this?

Display IP number in the Show Info/More Info section of a network computer. MAC address would be a bonus.

After deleting a file, the next file should be selected

Submitted by mmorearty on August 15, 2008 to Usability

In the Finder, after you delete a file with Cmd-Delete, there is no selection. At that point, if you press the down arrow key, the first file in the folder will be selected -- not the one that had been immediately after the now-deleted file. This makes (more...)

When you delete a file, the Finder should select the next file.

Built-in Zip file viewer

Submitted by tomerb on August 13, 2008 to Usability

OK, we have a built-in movie editor, but not a compressed file viewer?
GUI for selectively extracting files is very useful!

Finder: Queued file copy/move operations

Submitted by Flauchhaus on January 2, 2009 to Annoyance

When you launch 2 big files copies (File Copy A, then File copy B), the finder do both file copies at the same time. This is utterly inefficient as the HD head constantly move from file A to File B back and forth to copy a bit of A, then a bit of B.

A much more efficient way is to queue the file copy if the files are copied on the same HD, so the computer copies A, then B at full speed because HD Head moves a lot less.
Refinements:
Automatic reordering of the queue to start to do the (more...)

Icon inconsistency

Submitted by doubleforte on August 12, 2008 to Icons

Tthe folder icon in iTunes is different that the folder icon in the rest of the OS. Different form, different color, always looks like it's open. Looks like it never escaped from OS 9. What's up with that? And another thing while I'm thinking (more...)

If the icons look the same, they should do the same thing. Suggest changing their appearance. Also, update the iTunes folders to look like the system folders. (Windows has an "open" folder state and a "closed" folder state...something (more...)

Pause / Resume File Copy

Submitted by apulaski on January 1, 2009 to Annoyance

When copying large files there is no ability to pause or resume a job. Also, in the event of some sort of copy failure (power is lost to an external USB drive, or the computer goes to sleep) no resume functionality is available.

Add the ability to pause a file copy as well as resume a failed file copy to finder.

Exposé: Automatically update when a new window opens/closes

Submitted by Flauchhaus on November 17, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Bug, Usability

When a window opens or closes while expose is activated, Exposé doesn't update automatically, so for example it leaves an "death" window space when a window closes while in expose, or when a new window opens it just shows the window in (more...)

Automatically update Exposé on new/closed windows.
The only downside i could imagine is that new windows wouldn't be that noticeable when many windows are open. A short highlighting of the new window in Exposé would fix that nicely, also (more...)

Printing page ranges

Submitted by MicrowaveDave on October 3, 2008 to Usability

Most OS X print dialogue boxes only give the choice of printing 'All' pages, or printing pages 'From:' to 'to:' so printing non-consecutive pages requires multiple print jobs.

All standard OS X print boxes should allow a user to print page ranges. Some software already adds its own non-standard print box allowing you to enter a range of pages eg 'Print Pages: 1, 5-7, 12-15' but these are not common.
