Allow minimized windows the ability to be closed via contextual menu

Submitted by migueld on December 19, 2008 to Usability

Some programs allow minimized windows to be closed such as iTunes, Word and Finder. However most programs don't. It would be useful if all programs had this functionality.

Allow minimized windows the ability to be closed via the contextual menu.

Finder's back button overrides folder settings

Submitted by migueld on December 13, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

When using the Finder's back button, it overrides folder settings. That often results in inadequate views for your folders. For example, cover flow is inadequate for a folder that contains generic folders.

History traversal via the (more...)

Do not override views when using the back button.

iTunes: when sorting by date added, tracks appear out of order within each album

Submitted by migueld on December 16, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

When looking at the latest albums that one adds to his/her library, it'd be useful if the tracks within each album appeared in order. There are a couple of workarounds such as using applescripts, or a smart playlists, but none prove to be an ideal (more...)

A possible solution could be to add a new property such as "Date Added by Track#" or "Album by Date Added" so that all tracks within an album are shown in ascending track # order (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc ) regardless of whether the listing (more...)

WYSIWYG Font lists in Fontpanel, Fontbook & iWork/iLife apps

Submitted by Flauchhaus on December 12, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

The font panel and font lists in iWork/iLife apps aren't previewing fonts in the list and the preview area is only for the selected font, so its hard to choose fonts if you don't know the exact name of it.

Preview every font in the font list of the font panel.

Finder: Queued file copy/move operations

Submitted by Flauchhaus on January 2, 2009 to Usability

When you launch 2 big files copies (File Copy A, then File copy B), the finder do both file copies at the same time. This is utterly inefficient as the HD head constantly move from file A to File B back and forth to copy a bit of A, then a bit of B.

A much more efficient way is to queue the file copy, so the computer copies A, then B at full speed because HD Head moves a lot less.
Refinements:
Automatic reordering of the queue to start to do the small copies first to maximize the number (more...)

Delete Individual Items in Trash

Submitted by jay314 on December 29, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

I want to delete individual files from the trash, without emptying the whole trash bin.

This can be done via the terminal, but it should be available through finder.

Allow the user to press CMD + delete on a selection of items in the trash to permanently delete them.

Applications can set active desktop in Spaces

Submitted by FenianEMT on December 17, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

Individual applications are able to change the active desktop in spaces. In many cases, this is not intentional. This is a usability disaster. There is absolutely no reason why a space should be changed in response to anything but direct user instruction.

Do not allow the active desktop to be changed by any means other than user selection.

Pause / Resume File Copy

Submitted by apulaski on January 1, 2009 to Annoyance

When copying large files there is no ability to pause or resume a job. Also, in the event of some sort of copy failure (power is lost to an external USB drive, or the computer goes to sleep) no resume functionality is available.

Add the ability to pause a file copy as well as resume a failed file copy to finder.

Bluetooth File Exchange application is terrible

Submitted by MicrowaveDave on December 28, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

It's absolute crap! It can't transfer folders, baulks when transferring too many files at the same time, doesn't have a search function and doesn't display any information other than file size. It forces users to copy items to the (more...)

Allow users to mount Bluetooth devices in the Finder. Problem solved.

iTunes: add tracks in order

Submitted by migueld on December 14, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

When importing from a CD tracks are added in order (track # order), but when importing from another location they are not. For example when getting music from Amazon, the tracks are added out of order.

Add tracks by track # order.

No 'Terminal Services' equivalent for OS X Server

Submitted by MicrowaveDave on December 8, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

OS X really needs a Terminal Services server. Supposedly it wouldn't currently work because it's too difficult to adapt the Quartz graphics engine to work on a virtual screen, but it really limits businesses who would prefer to run OS X on (more...)

Apple will never be a serious contender for corporate clients without this functionality because it is becoming such a popular, cost-effective and easily maintainable way to manage IT resources. They really need to invest time and money bringing this (more...)

Finder: Connect to Server & Spaces

Submitted by mojo2012 on December 28, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

If you open the "connect to server" dialog, it will bring you to the space where you opened it the last time.
But as it is a dialog, it should be opened on the space you are currently working on. This happens even if you don't have (more...)

Always open the "connect to server" dialog on the current space.

iTunes ignores the system-wide 'Check for updates' setting

Submitted by MicrowaveDave on December 24, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

iTunes still checks for updates even if I have turned off 'Check for updates' in the Software Updates system prefeference pane. Users have to manually turn off updates in iTunes itself.

This is absolutely infuriating for novice (more...)

iTunes updates can separately be disabled in the application itself, but because it is an Apple application, it should respect the system-wide update setting.
