Finder: use the searchbox for filtering of folder contents
The searchbox in the finder window is somehow broken. The fact that everytime you enter a search term the whole computer is searched is simply not understandable (from my point of view).
I (partly) like the way the "searchbox" in vista/win7 works. So I'have an idea how to adapt such a behaviour to Mac OS X:
If you enter text (without pressing return) into the seachbox of a finder window then the folder contents should (more...)

"delete" & "rename" option during "open" & "save as" dialogs!
Often when I save files I would love to rename an existing file, in order to keep the new and the old file name's coherent....but I can't do that on the fly! I would love to be able to rename (or move to trash) from within the program's (more...)

Preview - Next/Previous active for single item
If you have a single item open in preview the next/previous buttons are still active and clickable. This is counter-intuitive because it hints that there are next and previous items.
In Safari (and other browsers) the next and previous (more...)
I believe they should be greyed out according to the following rules:
[1] Single item - both buttons greyed out
[2] First item - previous button greyed out
[3] Last item - next button greyed out

Stacks should update changes such as renaming and custom icons
When making changes such as renaming files, or customizing icons, they are not updated on a stack. For example, when renaming a file, if the stack is sorted by name, it doesn't re-arrange by the new naming. Also when customizing icons within a folder, (more...)
Stacks should update any and all changes such as renaming and custom icons.

Window Management: autosize windows that are larger than the screen
If you start an application (like iCal, Mail, Safari) and maximize it to the screensize the actual window size is stored. The next time the app starts up, the size is restored.
So far, this behaviour is greate.
But if you restart your computer (more...)
Adjust the window width to the current screen width if the window is wider than the screen.

Finder: Folders first please! (folders on top)
When I open Finder and try to find some file I have to scroll all the page down to see the folders. And this is so anoying, because I have to scroll down a hundred times to find something.
Folders should be first "type of file", and be always the first to appear in each drive, folder or subfolder on Finder and on Open / Save dialogs of all Apps.
Apple could create a button “show folders first”. Thus who want (more...)

Trying to rename a folder in use results in unhelpful dialog
When trying to rename a folder in use, an unhelpful misleading dialog shows up "An unexpected error occurred (error code -8065)".
Display a more helpful dialog such as "Operation can't be completed while folder is in use". There should not be any "unexpected" or "error" wording. It's not unexpected, it's a normal operation that's (more...)

Application icons are not refreshed when an app is freshly installed
Usually when you install a new application or update an existing application the system uses a "default" icon for that app in the application list until you start the application.
The problem is that even when the app is started for a (more...)
A simple refresh of the icons after the app is started would do the trick.

Finder (feature request): rename more files at once
Renaming many files in finder is very tedious. Here are two propositions for improving the rename functionality.
It would be cool to have a bulk rename mode. I can think of this two sub modes:
1. If more files are selected and the rename mode is activated, only the first file should be in rename mode. After pressing return to commit the change, the next file (more...)

Time Machine: Improve backup/restore Performance
Backing up: Time Machine takes way too much time to back up files as small as 20MB and while the backup process is running it uses quite much CPU usage so if the user runs an app/game it slows down quite significantly. The beginning and ending of backups (more...)
Improve backup/restore Performance. Don't just back up files every hour - back them up "live" as they change. Run the backup process with lower HDD/CPU priority so it doesn't slow down the running system/apps/games.

Spaces: started apps are shown on top of the spaces overview
If you start an app and then switch to the spaces overview and wait til the app has finished loading, it shows up in front of the spaces overview.
This looks like in the screenshot.
If apps are started and then spaces is activated, the starting app should be shown on that space, where it has been started.
It should look it has been started before spaces was activated.

Address Book's "search for duplicates" needs to be more informative about conflicts
When Address Book finds duplicate contacts, it simply asks you whether or not you wish to merge the contacts, without any supplementary information. It's impossible to make a good decision based on that information.
Give it a dialogue similar to the sync conflicts dialog - we can see both the contacts, and if they are indeed identical, we can choose to merge them.
