Trying to rename a folder in use results in unhelpful dialog

Submitted by migueld on November 21, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

When trying to rename a folder in use, an unhelpful misleading dialog shows up "An unexpected error occurred (error code -8065)".

Display a more helpful dialog such as "Operation can't be completed while folder is in use". There should not be any "unexpected" or "error" wording. It's not unexpected, it's a normal operation that's (more...)

Application icons are not refreshed when an app is freshly installed

Submitted by bastyani on September 26, 2009 to Annoyance, Bug

Usually when you install a new application or update an existing application the system uses a "default" icon for that app in the application list until you start the application.
The problem is that even when the app is started for a (more...)

A simple refresh of the icons after the app is started would do the trick.

QuickTime X is missing some features

Submitted by bastyani on August 30, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

(applies to the new QuickTime X - part of the new Snow Leopard 10.6)
The new QuickTime X is missing some features that are otherwise found in the older QuickTime versions. For example there is no possibility to show the timecode or frame number (more...)

Implement features that were already working in previous QT versions.

Submitted by migueld on January 12, 2010 to Annoyance, Usability

When trying to eject a disk if a file or folder is in use, the user is given the following generic warning:

"The disk ... can't be ejected because one or more programs may be using it"

The problem is that it (more...)

Specify which program/s or file/s are in use so that the user may take proper action.

Address Book's "search for duplicates" needs to be more informative about conflicts

Submitted by Malteser on September 7, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

When Address Book finds duplicate contacts, it simply asks you whether or not you wish to merge the contacts, without any supplementary information. It's impossible to make a good decision based on that information.

Give it a dialogue similar to the sync conflicts dialog - we can see both the contacts, and if they are indeed identical, we can choose to merge them.

Almost all settings in the System Preferences are missing an undo/revert function

Submitted by bastyani on August 25, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

When you change some parameters in the System Settings there is no way to undo.
There are some of them where you can find an "Revert" and "Save" function but once
you save it you cannot revert it. The revert button is (more...)

Add Undo / Revert option.

Safari: Provide the password assistant on web-account creation

Submitted by Flauchhaus on August 25, 2009 to Usability

The password assistant is a nice and easy to use feature of osx to create safe and rememberable passwords, but most users only see it while setting a user password.
On websites that require account creations it likely won't get used because

Provide the password assistant on websites that require passwords to register and haven't already saved credentials. It could be shown/opened similar to the caps-lock warning in a password field for example.

'Date deleted' column in Trash

Submitted by manujarvinen on February 20, 2010 to Annoyance, Usability

There should be a 'date deleted' column in the Trash so that you can find easily what you have recently deleted.

It's a pain in the ass if you need a file you put into the Trash last week, but can't remember its name. (more...)

Pages: Enable copy for selected text of a given style

Submitted by Ptujec on December 14, 2009 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

There is an option in Pages which enables you to select all uses of a given style (see attached screenshot). Unfortunately one can't do anything with this selected text. Would be nice to be able to copy this selection.

Front Row will not play rented movies

Submitted by dehetepappie on October 29, 2009 to Annoyance

OK so we can rent movies in the Store but only watch them through iTunes or via an AppleTV, and not through Front Row? Way to go Apple!

Get your asses in gear and spend some time coding on that redheaded stepchild of yours called Front Row. YouTube and Flickr support like the AppleTV also wouldn't hurt.

Menu closes if you miss the menu item for a little

Submitted by bastyani on August 23, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

Almost in every menu in OS X when you want to select a menu item if
you for example by accident miss that item for a few pixels and you click on the empty space the whole menu closes. Most problematic when there are a lot of submenus
opened (more...)

The menu should not close if you miss the item.

Mail: Conversation View in threaded mail summary

Submitted by Flauchhaus on November 30, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

Mail allows viewing mails in threads but only shows a summary of the conversation (subject, date, sender) on the summary mail - but not the content of the mails. To view the content of the mails every mail still has to be opened one after another.

If "Organise by Thread" is enabled, the mail summary of the threaded mails should be improved by a Conversation View. If the mails are very huge or the conversation is very long, older mails automatically should collapse (similar to gmail).

Spotlight to scan network drives

Submitted by HIP70890 on February 7, 2010 to Bug

Apple has de-actived spotlights scans on network shares on snow leopard clients. Tags are now only being created on the local system and on Mac OSX Server, which results in not finding files on the network shares when searching for them via Spotlight.

Provide a feature by which I can make Spotlight scan the remote network drives. Either all or better for selected drives.

There is no native support for read/write NTFS in OS X

Submitted by bastyani on November 13, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

Currently there is no native support for write mode on NTFS disks under OS X. Only read from NTFS formatted disks is supported. The situation is perhaps more complicated than it seems as probably there are some legal issues between Apple and Microsoft (more...)

Luckily for now there are some free alternatives ( like NTFS-3G etc. ), but I really think that this should work straight out of the box.

Front Row stops playing music once you exit the Music section

Submitted by dehetepappie on October 29, 2009 to Annoyance

OK so I'm playing some music through Front Row, and decide I want to look at a few photos. As soon as I move up to the main menu to get to Pictures, the music stops. Who thought this was a good idea?

Only stop playing music when the user selects something to play that has audio.
