Merge folders option when copying/moving

Submitted by Flauchhaus on August 12, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

When copying a folder to a location where a folder with the same name already exists the only option is to replace the folder (and loosing all files from the replaced folder) or stop the copy/move operation.

Add a "merge" button/option when there are duplicate foldernames while copying/moving, so the user can choose what he wants.

When trying to restore files deleted to the Trash, the information about the original location of the file, maybe as an additional column in the Trash folder view, could have been very helpful.

List the apps that prevents unmounting

Submitted by Flauchhaus on August 11, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

Ejecting external storage devices often isn't possible because some app/process still using the device. When trying to eject/unmount the finder just pops up an error message saying that the device isn't ejectable and you have to close the apps (more...)

When unmounting fails the finder should list which apps/processes are preventing it, and optionally switch to the app.

Filesize of selected file(s) in statusbar

Submitted by basvdijk on August 16, 2008 to Usability

When selecting a file in finder, the statusbar only displays how many items are selected and how much free space there is on the harddisk. You can not see how large the current selected file(s) is/are.

Add the total size of the selected file(s) to the statusbar of the finder window.

Default Search in finder should be in CURRENT FOLDER not the whole computer

Submitted by renatocoral on October 24, 2008 to Usability

Normally when you search for files inside FINDER you look for files within a especific folder and that should be the default option. If you are looking for files on the whole computer you can always go directly to Spotlight.

Dialog windows lack keyboard shortcuts and tabbing (by default)

Submitted by Oscar on August 10, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

By default, tabbing through buttons in a dialog window is off, which makes it ever so bothersome to quickly deal with them. Furthermore there is no proper indication of hotkeys, like you have in Windows (underlining the letter).

For instance, (more...)

Non-resizing windows and lists

Submitted by baliset on August 12, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

There are many examples of Apple-included preferencepanes, utilities or interface elements that can't be resized to show the full width of items in lists, despite there being obvious needs to be able to do so. For example, the Login window itself (more...)

Make all such dialogs resizable. Better still, move printer management back out into its own utility, which was better in Tiger.

Improve printer settings usability

Submitted by dgood on August 12, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

The print dialogs in OS X are unnecessarily complex, presenting each printer capability in a dropdown, which isn't immediately apparent since it's not even labeled.

A tabbed interface would be more efficient, usable, and intuitive.

Finder: Tabbed browsing in Finder

Submitted by Flauchhaus on August 11, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

The Finder has no tabbed browsing option. Tabbed browsing would improve productivity for anyone who is familiar and comfortable with tabbed browsing (a lot of users). Tabbed Browsing is an option in Safari and the Terminal, why not in the Finder?

Add tabbed browsing in Finder, and the ability to drag files to tabs to move/copy them to the location of the tab.

Can't highlight text in text clippings

Submitted by dwf on August 11, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

The Finder has a feature called "text clippings". Essentially, highlight any text (in Safari, say) and drag it to a Finder folder or the desktop and a "text clipping" is created. This is essentially a file that is all metadata (which (more...)

A quick fix is documented at MacOSXHints: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20070308031011641 (more...)

File list ordered differently in File Open dialog and in Finder

Submitted by Rup on August 23, 2008 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

I like naming some of my folders starting with a "•" on my French Mac OS X system : this puts them up at the top of the list in the Finder (as in Image 1).

But when I open a File/Open or File/Save dialog in any application, (more...)

Submitted by justin on August 13, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

The user cannot view the contents of a clipping, which is odd since the user an view the contents of a text document or Pages document.

Tasks bringing applications to the front

Submitted by Greymatters on October 6, 2008 to Annoyance, Usability

You give "Application A" a task to do. While it is doing this, you go to "Application B" and continue working. In the middle of typing, you realize that you are now typing in "Application A" as it has completed its task and (more...)

At the very least, give the user an option to have tasks complete in the background.

After deleting a file, the next file should be selected

Submitted by mmorearty on August 15, 2008 to Usability

In the Finder, after you delete a file with Cmd-Delete, there is no selection. At that point, if you press the down arrow key, the first file in the folder will be selected -- not the one that had been immediately after the now-deleted file. This makes (more...)

When you delete a file, the Finder should select the next file.

Submitted by tomerb on August 13, 2008 to Usability

OK, we have a built-in movie editor, but not a compressed file viewer?
GUI for selectively extracting files is very useful!
