Trying to rename a folder in use results in unhelpful dialog

Submitted by migueld on November 21, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

When trying to rename a folder in use, an unhelpful misleading dialog shows up "An unexpected error occurred (error code -8065)".

Display a more helpful dialog such as "Operation can't be completed while folder is in use". There should not be any "unexpected" or "error" wording. It's not unexpected, it's a normal operation that's (more...)

Snow Leopard Expose glow is ugly

Submitted by kelchm on September 4, 2009 to Aesthetics

The blue Expose glow in Snow Leopard is pretty ugly. I don't know how this got out the door, but I'd really like to see it fixed.

Give us a less jarring/ugly color option.

Ugly "loading" mouse cursor

Submitted by mojo2012 on July 16, 2009 to Aesthetics

Sometimes a realy ugly loading cursor appears. It seems to be a watch/clock. I think this is something like the "small" loading cursor on windows (mouse cursor + small hour glass).

Remove the cursor or make a nice beachball-like one!

Finder: Folders first please! (folders on top)

Submitted by victoranselme on July 14, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

When I open Finder and try to find some file I have to scroll all the page down to see the folders. And this is so anoying, because I have to scroll down a hundred times to find something.

Folders should be first "type of file", and be always the first to appear in each drive, folder or subfolder on Finder and on Open / Save dialogs of all Apps.

Apple could create a button “show folders first”. Thus who want (more...)

Finder: automatically disable icon preview for icon sizes below a certain size

Submitted by mojo2012 on July 7, 2009 to Aesthetics, Usability

I like to have 16x16 icons for certain folders with many content. The problem is, that document files, eg. txt, pdf, doc, etc., have a preview, others, like dmg don't have previews. This makes some files/filetypes unrecognizable.

It would be better, if the preview would be AUTOMATICALLY disabled for small icon sizes. So, If I change from icon view to list view (very small icons) the preview should be disabled automatically.

And yes, I know, that I can disable (more...)

Safari: incorrect behaviour for "graphite" theme

Submitted by mojo2012 on May 17, 2009 to Aesthetics, Bug

I don't like "traffic light" colors so I always switch to "graphite". This gives the whole system a very consistent chrome look. But the loading indicator of Safari's address bar does always look blue.

Make Safari's loading indicator match the chosen system theme.

Allow dock position to be set independent of menu bar.

Submitted by kelchm on February 22, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

Admittedly this might have a somewhat limited scope, but for those of us using multiple monitors, the ability to position the dock entirely independently of the menu bar would be a welcome feature.

Personally, I don't really use the (more...)

Add a moveable dock to the Displays pane in System Preferences like the menu bar has. The user can then move the dock by dragging it to any available edge.

Cursor Resizing Needs Improvment

Submitted by jay314 on December 29, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

The default Leopard cursor is too small. Resizing the cursor using the Universal Access options results in an ugly, pixel-resized cursor.

Either improve cursor resizing or allow the user to set larger, custom cursors.

Menu font and size cannot be changed

Submitted by MicrowaveDave on December 28, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

OS X doesn't allow the user to change menu (and menu bar) fonts and sizes.

I have many elderly or disabled clients who have poor eyesight and need bigger fonts. Some are stuck with using OS 9 or Windows because they simply cannot (more...)

Allow the user to pick their own fonts for menus, or at least give them the option to increase the size of the default font.

Use Icon instead of Application Menu Name

Submitted by mojo2012 on December 22, 2008 to Aesthetics, Icons

It would be greate to have an OPTION to use the application icon as in the menu instead of the application name.
So to the right of the apple icon there would be the safari icon.

Sometimes it happens to me, that I have an app with (more...)

To be able to use the app icon instead of the name would free some space and (imho) looks great.

Finder's back button overrides folder settings

Submitted by migueld on December 13, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

When using the Finder's back button, it overrides folder settings. That often results in inadequate views for your folders. For example, cover flow is inadequate for a folder that contains generic folders.

History traversal via the (more...)

Front Row runs on primary monitor only and blanks the others

Submitted by moole on December 6, 2008 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Bug, Usability

On a dual monitor setup, Front Row runs on primary display only, blacking all others out.
It prevents you from working on your mac while secondary display showing photos/movies/music through Front Row to your family or friends.

Give user an option to choose on which monitor Front Row will show, not blacking out any others. Route Apple Remote commands to Front Row when running.

This will allow setup Front Row for your wife/children/guests like this:

Audio-MIDI-Setup: Move Audio settings to System Preferences

Submitted by Flauchhaus on November 29, 2008 to Aesthetics, Usability

All audio preferences should be in System Preferences, not in an application in the utilities folder. Also its quite odd to configure 5.1 Soundcards in it. In Audio-MIDI-Setup you can set up multichannel/multiple sound-cards, midi devices, input/output (more...)

Move all audio preferences where they belong, to the System Preferences.
Make it easier to configure multichannel soundcards.
